Byzantine mosaics Enamel and Gold

The mosaics created in Ravenna for the Ostrogoth king Theodoric (493-526 A.D.) are the first complete manifestations of Byzantine art in the West. The golden background dominates, followed by silver, which is a novelty in Italian mosaics.
